I t’s two weeks before Christmas, which means the Shaughnessys are deep into their December rituals. Cookies have been baked and sprinkled with enough sugar to give a gingerbread man diabetes. A Christmas tree, sparkling with colored lights and surrounded by a small troop of Santa Clauses, stands in the corner of the living room, waiting. Harry and Charlotte Shaughnessy watch their children dip into a stash of ornaments: a Welsh flag from Grace’s semester abroad; a bauble from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, where Todd is a freshman; a trinket embroidered with Brennen’s name and , the year the youngest Shaughnessy was born. Harry, nursing a rum and Coke, smiles at the sight of an even older ornament: a stocking that says “Charlotte and Harry, ,” their first Christmas as a couple. In those days, the Shaughnessys were Catholic. They herded their children to Mass on Sundays and celebrated the sacraments, mostly. While Charlotte taught at the parish school and Harry started a computer consulting business, they tried, for the most part, to follow the church’s doctrines.

Being an atheist means coming to grips with reality. And the reality is twofold. We’re going to die as individuals, and the whole of humanity, unless we find a way to colonise other planets, is going to go extinct. So there’s lots of things that we have to deal with that we don’t like. We just come to grips with the reality. Life is the result of natural selection, and death is the result of natural selection.
We are evolved in such a way that death is almost inevitable.

I never dreamed of having a big wedding, or even any wedding at all. When I met my now husband, he agreed that he would be happy eloping. But when the time came and we were getting married it became clear that the event was not for us but for our families — for each of us to introduce the people who had shaped our lives to our new spouse and for our families to get to know this new person.
This ritual seemed especially important in light of the fact that we come from such different cultures. My husband is a Kurdish Turk, raised Muslim. In the end, we had three weddings. The results went from utterly unrelatable to downright racist.

An ad featuring Ron Reagan , son of the Republican former President Ronald Reagan, surprised some viewers of the recent Democratic primary debates. In the second spot, run by the Freedom from Religion Foundation , Reagan expressed concern that religious beliefs have gained too much political influence in the United States. But the temptation to get romantically involved with a non-Christian tends to be framed differently. In this article, I shall not be trying to give a method for counseling people who are facing such a temptation. Such an article would include a clearer picture of what marriage looks like: making decisions about career, where to live, how to spend money, how to raise children, etc.
All of this is compounded when you and your spouse are living for different things. To explore some of those things better, consider this article. Rather, I shall offer a brief biblical theology of dating unbelievers. I want to make the point that it is a matter of obedience to God not to pursue a relationship with a non-believer. My hope is that this article will be of some use to people in such a situation, but of more use to the Christian who, long before the temptation arises, needs to make a stronger resolve not to get romantically involved with a non-Christian.
And just to be clear: getting romantically involved is likely to happen if you spend a great deal of time with someone of the opposite sex one-on-one.

Until recent decades, the idea of a Catholic marrying outside the faith was practically unheard of, if not taboo. Such weddings took place in private ceremonies in the parish rectory, not in a church sanctuary in front of hundreds of friends and family. These days, many people marry across religious lines. The rate of ecumenical marriages a Catholic marrying a baptized non-Catholic and interfaith marriages a Catholic marrying an non-baptized non-Christian varies by region.
In areas of the U. They are holy covenants and must be treated as such. A marriage can be regarded at two levels — whether it is valid in the eyes of the Church and whether it is a sacrament. Both depend in part on whether the non-Catholic spouse is a baptized Christian or a non-baptized person, such as a Jew, Muslim or atheist.
If the non-Catholic is a baptized Christian not necessarily Catholic , the marriage is valid as long as the Catholic party obtains official permission from the diocese to enter into the marriage and follows all the stipulations for a Catholic wedding. Almost everyone will encounter a rigid atheist at some point. sense of awe and transcendent love at the birth of her son was a turning point.
Okay, that is a really good question and I think one that we ought to spend some time thinking about. She has gone to college, and she has become an atheist. We have got to eliminate that within the church. And also we need to recognize that parents love their children, and families are to stay together, and we are to maintain those avenues of connection with our children as much as possible and to provide a means for those prodigals to come home. And prodigals do come home.
And sometimes you have someone who is just going through a time of questioning, a time of confusion. Keep those avenues open. I would also say that I understand why the mom is concerned about this, because the scripture tells us that a believer is not to marry an unbeliever. We should not be unequally yoked, as the Apostle Paul puts it. Instead you have a professing unbeliever marrying a professing unbeliever.
So marriage is a good thing for everybody, including for atheists.
